Steps to becoming an MCEM User
Fill in the MCEM User Request Form (below).
Return the form to the Manager.
The Manager will contact you to arrange a New User meeting to be attended by yourself, your supervisor (compulsory for students, desirable for junior research staff), the relevant Instrument Manager(s) and the Manager. The New User meeting will determine the following:
(a) The research problem to be solved;
(b) If the MCEM facilities are suitable for solving this research problem;
(c) If so, which microscopes and specimen preparation techniques are needed;
(d) The scope of the work and what training is required;
Note: Users are normally trained to do the research themselves, unless the amount of work involved is relatively small or if the microscopy and interpretation is too complex, in which case it is more efficient for Centre staff to perform the research. The User is expected to be present while their samples are being examined.
e) Safety issues.
The Instrument Manager(s) will contact you to arrange training on microscopes and in specimen preparation techniques as required.
You must download and read the MCEM User Manual (below);
You must attend an Induction session before:
(a) you can work in the building unsupervised (you are under supervision during training);
(b) you are granted ID card access to the building; and
(c) you are able to make instrument bookings.
Induction sessions are usually held on the morning of the third Thursday of each month in the Centre (Building 81) Room G10 (Meeting Room). The Induction session takes a little over an hour and will cover the material in the User Manual, please bring a copy of this with you. At the end of the Induction session you will complete and sign the Safety Induction Checklist and User Agreement on the last page of the User Manual. All external Users and Monash Users from other campuses must also complete the Monash Safety Induction Program.
Please note that due to the heavy demand for Centre facilities and for training, it is very difficult for the Centre to accommodate urgent requests. Training is carried out in the order that requests were received. At times the wait to commence training exceeds one month for the SEMs and three months for the TEMs and it may take longer than two weeks before samples can be examined by a Centre staff member.
